ASEAN Economic Cooperation

Chapter 7 in The Economies of the Asean Countries, 1982, pp 167-175 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract ASEAN was formed in 1967, against a background of external and internal tensions. Externally, the Vietnam War threatened increasing superpower involvement in the region. Internally, recent conflicts included Indonesian confrontation with the new Federation of Malaysia and the break up of the Federation in 1965. The Philippines claimed Sabah. The principal stated aims of ASEAN were economic and social, but the achievement of greater political harmony was an important unstated aim.
