The Irresistible Rise of Industrial Capitalism (1800–70)
Michel Beaud
Chapter 3 in A History of Capitalism 1500–1980, 1981, pp 74-113 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Can the path covered in three centuries be seen clearly enough? At the beginning of the sixteenth century, in the name of God and the king, armed expeditions conquered large areas in the Americas, massacring, pillaging, and bringing back fabulous treasures. At the end of the eighteenth century, in the name of nature and freedom, economists, anxious to discover the source of wealth, described the conditions of capital accumulation.
