Abstract: Abstract The reader need not be held in suspense. No, the differences between the early 1980s and the early 1930s in Latin America are more significant than their similarities. But the question is pertinent, and the comparison could cast light on both historical episodes, while deepening understanding of the cyclical behaviour of peripheral, semiindustrialised economies, and about their interaction with the international economy.
