Chapter 2 in British and American Women at Work, 1986, pp 22-40 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract If we look at women’s employment at a recent point in time, we see that older British women in their forties and fifties were somewhat more likely to be employed than their American counterparts, but the differences were not large (Table 2.1). Among younger women in their late twenties and early thirties, however, American women were much more likely than British women to be employed; the difference between employment rates in the two countries was about 20 percentage points for women in their late twenties and nearly 10 percentage points for women in their early thirties.
