Chapter 3 in Migration of Financial Resources to Developing Countries, 1986, pp 40-68 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract A cursory viewer, casting a rapid glance, may find this chapter redundant. However, a reflective perusal may indicate how it fits into the rest of the jigsaw. In the context of resource transfer it is pertinent to look into the recent economic scene in the developing countries. What were the economic circumstances in which the less-developed countries (LDCs) have come to be at the receiving end of the resource flows? How have their main sectors, namely, agriculture and industry, performed in the recent past? What is the situation of their main sources of foreign exchange earnings — that is, their trade with the industrial countries and among themselves? What are the recent trends in their terms of trade? What is the international economic climate? How have they reacted to various exogenous shocks? These have a direct bearing on the financial capabilities of the LDCs, and the resource transfer to them from bilateral, multilateral and commercial sources. Thus, this is a necessary prelude to what is to follow in the next three chapters.
