Abstract:
Abstract There are two main types of discussion about social mobility. One is of a completely non-academic kind, often consisting of questions about ‘getting on in life’. What are my chances of getting such and such a job, or even any job? What qualifications will I, or my child, need? If I take this job, where will I be in ten year’s time? It is like a fascinating, real life, soap opera in which we all take part and could be called ‘Getting On’, or indeed, ‘Room at the Top’.
