The City, Takeovers and Mergers
Roy Hattersley
Chapter 11 in Economic Priorities for a Labour Government, 1987, pp 140-149 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The Conservatives place unqualified faith in the efficiency of the market. No Government since the war has spoken in such laudatory terms about the virtues of competition. There is much criticism of the Government for what is believed to be its encouragement of unregulated market forces. Its policy towards monopolies and mergers has usually allowed, and often encouraged, the increased concentration of British industry. Its record is deplorable.
