On Sustainable Development and National Accounts
Herman Daly
Chapter 4 in Economics, Growth and Sustainable Environments, 1988, pp 41-56 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This essay discusses an anomaly that confronts current views on economic development: namely, that economic development as currently understood and measured is neither sustainable for a long future nor generalisable to all presently living people. There follows a preliminary proposal for changes in national accounting and valuation procedures necessary to correct this fundamental anomaly in GNP-based theories of growth and development.
