Abstract: Abstract The Central Valley of Scotland now has the largest concentration of semiconductor production in Europe, amounting to 80 per cent of UK production and more than 20 per cent of European production. In hopeful analogy with California’s ‘Silicon Valley’, reference is now made to Scotland’s ‘Silicon Glen’. Six of the leading multinational companies in the semiconductor industry have plants in Silicon Glen. The Scottish Development Agency estimates employment in semiconductor production in 1985 at 4600, a considerable increase from 1800 in 1978.
