Chapter 3 in News in the Regions, 1989, pp 15-24 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract North Yorkshire is mainly moors, dales and the beauty of the Herriot country. East Yorkshire is the flatlands of the Vale and the gently rolling Wolds — all good farming country. West Yorkshire has the Pennines and the industrial centres of Bradford, Halifax and Huddersfield. South Yorkshire has the coalfields, the steaming power stations, and surviving remnants of the steel industry. For broadcasting purposes, Lincolnshire and much of Nottinghamshire must be added, for the huge transmitters at Emley Moor in the east Pennines and Belmont near Lincoln serve them as well.
