Abstract: Abstract Until bypassed by the M62, Huddersfield was the first bastion of West Yorkshire that a traveller from mid-Lancashire met after crossing the Pennines. It is still the focal point of Kirklees district. It sits in a hollow, with hills rising to 600 or 800 feet on nearly all sides, and with a tall chimney or two as reminders of its industrial heritage. It still prospers with high-quality textiles, engineering and chemicals. Though no more than 20 slow miles from Leeds and 8 from Halifax, it is a separate community with strong pride in itself.
