Abstract:
Abstract In the winter of 1971–2, the level of unemployment in the United Kingdom broke through one million. Newspaper headlines shrieked disbelief and horror. The budget of March 1972 saw the government apply its third dose of ‘reflation’ inside a year. Unemployment began to fall.
