Abstract: Abstract The theme of urban poverty that is addressed in this book will be illustrated by the existence and visibility of the phenomenon in one of the major cities of the Caribbean, namely, Fort-de-France, Martinique. Urban poverty in Martinique is a by-product of the plantation economy and the continuing dependence of the island on metropolitan France. It is not of recent origins; however, it has become a pronounced and shocking reality in the slums of Fort-de-France and other capitals of the Caribbean islands since the end of the Second World War.
