Chapter 11 in Do Economic Sanctions Work?, 1992, pp 173-195 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The various limitations of the economic sanctions notwithstanding, the hostage crisis was brought to a happy conclusion, the hostages being finally released on 20 January 1981, not by force but through negotiations between Iran and the United States, with Algeria as mediator. The major concern of this chapter is to establish whether or not it was the economic sanctions which led to a settlement, or, more precisely, to what extent the economic sanctions contributed to the eventual peaceful settlement.
