Abstract: Abstract On the occasion of the bicentenary of the death of Adam Smith (1723–90) and in recollection of the reception of his economic thought in different countries, this is a paper on Adam Smith’s reception in India, as suggested by Professor Hiroshi Mizuta, to whom we most gratefully acknowledge our debt. India is of importance to Smith’s economic thought both as a British colony and as a developing nation (Kregal, 1972, 11).
