Chapter 11 in Planning and Market in Soviet and East European Thought, 1960s–1992, 1993, pp 267-295 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This chapter is going to be a mixed bag. On the one hand, I would like to express my views in a systematic way on some issues which were discussed in the preceding chapters and, on the other, discuss problems which have not been raised hitherto, but which are somehow connected with our topic. I will try to explain why the views on planning and market changed during the period under review, answer the question whether reform of the system was possible, touch on some problems connected with the transition to a market economy, and, finally, I will discuss the possible role of planning in a market economy.
