Structural Change and Foreign Trade in the EC

Chapter 14 in Trade Policies towards Developing Countries, 1993, pp 191-201 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Notwithstanding some important differences in detail, the general pattern of structural change appears to be largely the same in the EC as in the US or Japan. This is not very surprising in view of the interdependence of these economies resulting from international trade and mobility of resources, especially capital, across their geographic boundaries. A marked decline in the share of agriculture during the last three decades and a rise in that of services is clearly noticeable in all three regions. The portion of GDP produced by manufacturing and other industrial activities has also been declining in all three regions. This process — often called deindustrialisation — has made the greatest headway in the US.
