Trade Preferences for Processed Goods from Developing Countries

Chapter 17 in Trade Policies towards Developing Countries, 1993, pp 238-258 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The European Community’s generalised system of preferences (GSP) was introduced in 1971 (for details, see Weston et al., 1980, and Weinmüller, 1984, p. 83). In determining the eligibility of a country for the scheme the EC has regarded that country’s membership in the Group of 77 as the main criterion. But apart from this group, generalised preferences were also granted to Romania in 1974 and to the People’s Republic of China in 1980. Applications from dependent territories were approved if their customs departments were authorised to issue certificates of origin. In 1984 a total of 149 developing countries were eligible for the GSP (Borrmann et al., 1985, p. 29).
