Chapter 1 in The Advanced Materials Revolution and the Japanese System of Innovation, 1994, pp 1-10 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract One of the features which characterises materials is that most of the time they are not in themselves final products. Nevertheless, every final product has to use materials and in addition the activities related to services generation and distribution rely on the development of materials. The properties of materials are critical factors in any end products or services and they therefore provide the framework for most sectors of the economy (such as capital goods, petrochemicals and chemicals, metallurgy, energy, agriculture, construction, transport, electronics, communications, defence, consumer goods, health and medical care, art, etc.).
