Chapter 4 in The Advanced Materials Revolution and the Japanese System of Innovation, 1994, pp 58-80 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The importance of changes in materials and their role in economic expansion are not always easy to realise. Many of the strategic materials presently in use are virtually invisible and account for a small proportion of the volume and value of the end product. When the development of a new material is linked to the birth of a new area its importance is somewhat eclipsed by the end products, technologies and services which are generated. In addition, materials that are first used to copy earlier forms have an even less perceptible impact.
