Chapter 5 in The Advanced Materials Revolution and the Japanese System of Innovation, 1994, pp 81-94 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter aims at providing a bridge between the analytical basis of Chapters 2, 3 and 4 and the discussion of the data obtained during the interviews with Japanese institutions about how they have responded to the development of advanced materials and superconductors (Chapters 6 to 9). As noted in Chapter 2, a number of recent studies have concentrated on discussing explanations of the Japanese economic and technological performance in the last two decades. This has resulted in the identification of various important features of the Japanese system, from the particular way Japanese firms are organised to the fostering and coordinating role of government agencies.
