The Concept of Competence Building
Kumiko Miyazaki
Chapter 2 in Building Competences in the Firm, 1995, pp 11-38 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The main purpose of this chapter is to develop an analytical framework. A review of the literature suggests that the neo-Schumpeterian approach is very relevant here in understanding the core competences of firms. Such competences enable firms to survive over long periods by continuously adapting to the changing environment and by allowing them to enter new product markets. Much of the success of Japanese electronics firms in continuously launching innovative products on the market can be attributed to their core competences. While this strategy would require not only technological skills, but organizational, manufacturing, and marketing skills, our focus is deliberately oriented towards technological competence. Given its pervasive, uncertain but strategic characteristics, technological competence is a vitally important area that firms cannot afford to ignore.
