The Role of Foreign Direct Investment in the Transformation of Eastern Europe
Hugo Radice
Chapter 10 in The Transformation of the Communist Economies, 1995, pp 282-310 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Debate on privatisation in the post-communist countries, as well as wider discussions of reform in or transformation of Soviet-type economies, has signally failed to acknowledge one of the most important features of the contemporary capitalist world: the deepening transnationalisation of economic activity.1 Although the foreign trade and payments of Eastern Europe have been the subject of considerable study, what is really needed is a shift in focus towards the role of foreign capital. This chapter aims to promote this shift, in particular by examining one aspect of this — the growth of inward foreign direct investment in the region, notably by transnational corporations.
