Chapter 2 in The Changing Industrial Map of Europe, 1996, pp 19-42 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The information technology (IT) industry has undergone profound structural and technological changes in recent years. In the office, the increasing power of microprocessor chips has encouraged the use of personal computers (PCs) either in conjunction with, or in place of, mainframe computer systems. Combined with more recent advances in communications technology, it has also encouraged the development of computer networks which in effect decentralise yet integrate computing capabilities.
