Abstract:
Abstract Tanzania experienced economic problems beginning in the late 1970s which persisted through the 1980s. One of the factors that contributed to this poor economic performance was the inefficiency of the agricultural marketing system. It caused a decline in producer prices for both food and export crops. This provided a disincentive to produce export crops and a shift to food crops sold through the parallel market. Co-operatives and marketing boards made huge losses which were covered by the government, sometimes through bank borrowing and guaranteed credit.
