Eastern European Welfare Systems in Comparative Perspective
Klaus Nielsen
Chapter 10 in Comparative Welfare Systems, 1996, pp 185-213 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter outlines the main features of the welfare systems of the Eastern European countries in a comparative perspective. It covers both the state socialist past, the highly unstable post-socialist present, and (speculations about) the likely future. The main purpose of the chapter is not to uncover factual details but rather to apply the conceptual framework of Western comparative welfare studies to the analysis of the momentous changes in the former state socialist countries. The Eastern European past, present and future welfare systems will be characterized by means of the well-known distinctions between three, four, or more welfare capitalisms. Furthermore the Eastern European developments will be related to Western discussion of the future welfare regime(s).
