Trade and Regional Integration in the Global Perspectives for Malaysia

Mohammad Haflah Piei

Chapter 7 in Alternative Perspectives in Third-World Development, 1996, pp 99-122 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract There has been an emerging trend for a global revival of regionally based trading arrangements between economies of the world. This phenomenon has been increasingly referred to as the ‘new regionalism’. Among the major regional trading arrangements which have recently taken effect are the North American Free Trade Area (NAFTA) the European Union (EU), and the Asean Free Trade Area (AFTA). All these regional arrangements had been negotiated and concluded almost concurrently with the recently concluded Uruguay Round of multilateral trade negotiation.
