The Pleasures and Pains of Modern Capitalism

George Stigler

Chapter 7 in Explorations in Economic Liberalism, 1996, pp 126-140 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract In my title I use the language of Bentham, and perhaps I should have asked Lord Harris to use his good offices to borrow Mr Bentham from University College, London, for this occasion. I am far from confident, however, that Bentham would approve of my preferences; and if he were to begin frowning as I spoke, I should be quite unnerved. Nevertheless, Bentham — who was an instinctive social planner — might well approve of some of the pleasures of capitalism which I shall emphasise.
