 Learning from Japan: The Yeast for Britain’s Manufacturing Regeneration?Colin Haslam, Karel Williams, Andy Adcroft, Sukhdev Johal and John Williams Chapter 5 in Japan and the European Periphery, 1996, pp 69-85 from Palgrave Macmillan Abstract: Abstract Learning from Japan is the title of a Department of Trade and Industry initiative, launched in 1993, to improve the performance of the UK auto components industry. The working assumption is that the Japanese production paradigm is different and is founded upon new manufacturing techniques which have transcendent virtues. These can therefore be accessed by British manufacturing industry and will work in the UK economy just as they do in Japan. Japanese parent firms and their transplant affiliates are identified a priori as centres of high performance and objects of emulation for host economy employees, who are then encouraged to participate in a process of self-criticism and value-reformation.
