Making Trade and Environmental Policy Making Mutually Compatible in Pakistan

Akhtar Hasan Khan

Chapter 13 in Trade, Environment & Sustainable Development, 1997, pp 149-154 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The environment has become a subject of great concern both at the national and the global level. It is multifaceted and has relationships with different spheres of economic activity such as agriculture, industry and ultimately trade. Having recognised this, Pakistan adopted a National Conservation Strategy in 1992 which aims to achieve conservation of national resources, sustainable development and improved efficiency in the use and management of resources. The operative part of this strategy includes programmes that will impinge upon Pakistan’s exports. This chapter examines the impact of environmental concerns on the foreign trade of Pakistan. It also seeks to find ways of addressing these environmental concerns without distorting the free flow of foreign trade.
