Quality of Life and Regional Development in China

Chen Jingke and Henk Voogd

Chapter 10 in Regional Science in Developing Countries, 1997, pp 130-146 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract A major, if not paramount, objective of regional development is the improvement of the quality of life (see, for example, Bowling, 1991; Campbell et al., 1976; Fried and Hohenberg, 1974; Slottje, 1991; Schmandt and Bloomberg, 1969). A proper analysis and assessment of the state of quality of life is essential for making and monitoring development strategies for a region. There exists a vast amount of studies in various disciplines about the meaning of ‘quality’ and its relevant dimensions (see, for example, Craik and Zube, 1976; Braden and Kolstad, 1991). In the next section it will be illustrated that the concept of quality of life is often used in different settings and by different disciplines (see, for example, Voogd, 1992, 1994).
