Urbanization in the Eastern Amazon

Semida Silveira

Chapter 24 in Regional Science in Developing Countries, 1997, pp 334-349 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Historically, occupation of the Amazon by modern civilization has evolved in a dispersed form, taking advantage of both the natural waterways to penetrate the region’s large area, and the immense amount of resources available for immediate exploitation. Despite this dispersion, and despite the low levels of technology used, production systems were established which served not only regional functions but also the demands of international and highly developed markets. More recently, the occupation of the Amazon has acquired a different character, implying an intensification in the exploitation of the region’s resources, industrialization followed by urbanization, and a rapid degradation of the natural environment.
