Timber Certification Initiatives and their Implications for Developing Countries

Markku Simula

Chapter 14 in Eco-Labelling and International Trade, 1997, pp 206-227 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract There are two main global environmental concerns related to forestry: climate change on account of the role of trees and forests in the carbon cycle; and biodiversity conservation, as the bulk of the world’s genetic resources are found in forest ecosystems, mainly in the tropics. The fundamental role of forests in maintaining life-supporting systems is gradually being understood now. Since this role is partly indirect (through upland soil and water conservation and through the impact on climate), forestry continues to have a low priority in political decision-making. Furthermore, it is often perceived as a marginal sector on account of its limited direct contribution to GDP in most countries.
