Socioeconomic Transformations in Central and Eastern Europe from the Perspective of Regional Science

Abstract:
Abstract Transformational processes in Central and Eastern Europe have been set in motion by the introduction of a system of parliamentary democracy and a market economy. They have resulted in the expansion of the private sector, the privatization of state-owned enterprises, and the development of banks, stock exchanges and insurance agencies. Consequently, the number of economic agents making decisions about location, investments, business contacts, and new organizations of production and foreign trade has grown prodigiously. The increase in the number of decision-makers multiplies the impact on economic space, modifying and transforming it. Another powerful influence on the space economy is the revived system of territorial self-government. Its organs set themselves different goals from those of low-level government administration, employ different modes of operation and use resources in different ways.
