Abstract Comparing civilized man with the state of the savage, the French philosopher, J.-J. Rousseau, wrote in 1754 in his Address on the Origin of Inequality, ‘vous sentirez combien la nature nous fait payer cher le mépris que nous avons fait de ses leçons’ (you should feel how dearly Nature makes us pay our disregard for its lessons).
