The Acrobat of Desire: Consumer Credit and its Linkages to Modern Consumerism
Michael Shaoul
Chapter 4 in Financial Institutions and Social Transformations, 1997, pp 68-91 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The title of this chapter is taken from a novel by Angela Carter.1In this book it is the name given to a troupe of mysterious acrobats that appear at a travelling circus. The acrobats perform an act during which they seemingly display the power to disassemble, multiply and juggle their limbs in a grotesquely erotic spectacle. As any reader of this book will discover, although undoubtedly beguiling, they are not without menace.
