Abstract: Abstract Against a background of spectacular economic development, the structure of industry and trade in the Asian NIEs, ASEAN and other countries of Asia is undergoing major changes. One reason for the migration of Japanese manufacturing industry into Asia has been the existence of wage differentials between Japan and the other countries of Asia. There is also growing interest in the effect of the economic development of Asia on wages (i.e., on wage levels and on inter-occupational differentials) in the advanced industrialized countries. It is for this reason important that we should attempt to define the wage structures of these countries more clearly by comparing them with that of Japan.
