Chapter 8 in Wage Differentials, 1998, pp 239-270 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract In this chapter, we investigate the wage structure in Germany, from the viewpoint of international comparison focusing on occupations. To investigate the German wage structure, we use data from the 1991 survey of the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP) that the German Economic Institute has been making from 1984. We use here the English version of GSOEP that Syracuse University provides for international researchers. We restrict the sample to respondents: the Germans who live in the former West Germany, work as full-time employees in the non-agricultural sector, and have all the information necessary for the following analyses. These restrictions reduce our sample size to 1482.
