Abstract: Abstract In the 1970s, a group of East Asian and Latin American countries came to be viewed as exemplars of newly-industrializing economies (NIEs). These were middle-income countries that were growing rapidly, incorporating advanced technology and moving towards industrial exports, and beginning to close the enormous gap between themselves and the advanced industrial economies. In this sense, they distinguished themselves from other developing nations which continued to rely on primary product exports to fall ever further behind in the development process.
