Mohamed Salih Chapter Chapter 5 in Environment and Sustainable Development in Eastern and Southern Africa, 1998, pp 62-82 from Palgrave Macmillan Abstract: Abstract Non governmental organizations differ in size, objectives and mode of operation, and include groups and institutions as diverse as farmers’ associations, women’s groups, youth organizations, co-operatives, independent welfare organizations, and church and environmental lobby groups. They are defined as “groups and institutions that are entirely or largely independent of government and characterized primarily by humanitarian or co-operative rather than commercial objectives” (Paul et al. 1991). NGOs are also referred to as “organizations that principally pursue activities contributing to the relief of suffering, promote the interests of the poor, protect the environment, or undertake community development” (Paul et al. 1991). Such institutions are found throughout the world and, as such, contribute enormously to the welfare of millions of beneficiaries.
