Abstract:
Abstract Air France has been state-owned since 1945 and this has entailed a close supervision over its management. The Government has continously influenced Air France’s attitude towards air transport regulation, aircraft procurement, network development, its partnership with Paris airports, operating and financial performance, labour management, marketing strategy, and collaboration and competition with other airlines. Air France has been for a long time a prestige-driven airline, reacting slowly to air transport evolution, which explains why it has acquired nicknames such as ‘elephant in an evening suit’. It has however tried in each of these fields to gain some autonomy in order that in the future it could become a truly commercial firm and to be able to face competition, deregulation, globalization and privatization.
