Abstract: Abstract Let me start by extending an extremely warm welcome both to Vítor Gaspar, the Director General of Research at the European Central Bank, and to his Research Group there. Although some of his group, like much of the rest of the staff at the ECB, will have metamorphosed from the preceding EMI, nevertheless the group is in an important sense newly born. It is good to have another Central Bank research department studying the crucial issues of the relationships between monetary and economic developments, and it is good that the ECB is giving so much importance and weight to such research.
