Chapter Chapter 6 in Learning from Disasters: A Management Approach, 2005, pp 65-87 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter draws heavily on the responses from those interviewed for the research programme underlying this book. It looks at these responses in terms of eight general concept groups derived from analysis of the research: organisational isomorphism; emotional impact; chance and disaster; attempted foresight; hindsight; organisational reaction; safety by compulsion; and safety philosophy. These concept groups may be viewed as general factors that can influence the ability of organisations to take steps towards ‘active foresight’. Active foresight is the goal of the organisational learning process: it combines foresight of the possible causes of disaster, with action to remove or reduce the risk of those causes taking effect.
