The Birth of WFP: One Man’s Inspiration
D. John Shaw
Chapter 2 in The UN World Food Programme and the Development of Food Aid, 2001, pp 6-18 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Few international organizations have been born in the personal and unusual way in which WFP was created. The birth of WFP in 1961 was due to the inspiration of one man, George McGovern. At the time, he was the first director of the newly created Office of Food for Peace in the Executive Office of United States President John F. Kennedy and special assistant to him. It is important to understand this background as it left its mark on WFP that has remained to the present day. This is how, and why, it happened.
