Structural Adjustment: Creating a New Textile Industry

Wei Houkai, Shen Zhiyu and Mark Wang

Chapter 9 in China’s Transition to a Global Economy, 2002, pp 191-204 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract China’s approach to the global economy has been orchestrated at several levels. There are macro-level changes to systems of trade, investment and social relations (as indicated in Chapters 2 to 5), some initiated by the state, some local, others matters of external innovation. There have also been reorganisations of the Chinese space economy, both at the level of large regions (Chapter 6) and at the level of the smaller zones and districts that pepper the country (Chapters 7 and 8). Yet in large measure, the global economy is approached in practice by changes within individual industries, changes at the micro-level. It is in the details of policy to individual industries, in the details of the development of competition and new forms of enterprise that the implications of China’s approach to the global economy can most clearly be seen.
