Chapter 5 in Japan and East Asia in Transition, 2003, pp 86-108 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Japan has maintained preponderant economic power in East Asia. The country has accounted for more than two-thirds of total gross domestic product (GDP) of the region, and has been a major source of capital, technology and foreign aid. Its trade and investment combined with official aid have sustained economic growth and industrialisation in most East Asian countries.
