The Myth of Exploding Income Inequality in Europe and the World
Xavier Sala-i-Martin
Chapter 1 in Europe and Globalization, 2002, pp 11-31 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This quote from one of the leaders of the ‘anti-globalization’ movement, Ignacio Ramonet, reflects five interesting issues. First, it shows that planetary inequalities are large. Very large. After all, ‘the combined wealth of the 358 richest people (all of them dollar billionaires) is greater than the total annual income of 45 per cent of the world’s poorest inhabitants, that is, 2.6 billion people’.
