Abstract: Abstract For centuries, Turkey has embodied a natural bridge between Europe and the Middle East and served as the passage between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. In size, Turkey is slightly larger than the US state of Texas, with a total area of 814,578 sq km. Its population is around 66.5 million, with an annual growth rate of 1.5%. Istanbul, its most prominent city, is home to 10 million people and Ankara, the capital, has a population of 3.7 million. Other large cities include Izmir (3.2 million) and Adana (1.7 million).
