Abstract:
Abstract Located on the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga, Latvia is bordered in the south by Lithuania (453 km), in the north by Estonia (339 km) and in the east by Belarus (141 km) and Russia (217km). Latvia covers an area of 64,589 sq km that consists, for the most part, of a low-lying plain with some moderate elevations in the east, the tallest of which is 311 m. Arable land accounts for 27% of the total land mass, and although it has no specific crop pattern, 13% of the permanent land use is given over to pasture. Forests and woodlands account for another 46%. The climate is continental with moderate winters largely due to the countrv’s maritime nosition.
