Chapter 8 in Economic Development, Inequality and War, 2003, pp 144-156 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Collier and Hoeffler’s econometric analysis (1998, pp. 568–9) shows that the possession of natural resources increases the occurrence and duration of civil war. Mwanasali (2000, p. 145) indicates the reasons why. Primary commodity exports present several advantages to the belligerents. Because they are generic products, rather than brand names, their origin can easily be concealed. They are usually the most heavily taxable, especially in kind, and their production or marketing does not require the complicated processes, as is the case of manufactured goods.’
